SAGAPONACK, NY -- Hyman Llewellyn Battle, Jr., died March 6, 2002. He was born in Rocky Mount, NC on January 19, 1925, son of Hyman Llewellyn Battle and Mamie Hackney Braswell.
He is survived by his wife, Reine King Battle, and sons Craig Llewellyn Battle, David Harrison Battle, John Martin Battle, Kemp Plummer Battle and seven grandchildren; brother, Thomas Braswell and sister-in-law, Charlotte Timberlake Battle.

SAGAPONACK, NY -- Hyman Llewellyn Battle, Jr., the longtime managing partner of a prominent New York City law firm, died on March 6 at his home in Sagaponack, NY. He was 77.
He was instrumental in building Battle Fowler, Stokes & Kheel into one of New York City's most presti- gious law firms. Battle Fowler was established in 1897 by George Gordon Battle, a much admired attorney and his cousin. He joined the firm in 1947 after his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania law school. He was named Battle Fowler's managing partner and served for over 30 years until his retirement in 1988. His partners included many outstanding attorneys, among them Theodore Kheel, the noted labor negotiator and Samuel Pierce, one of the most prominent black lawyers of his generation. "This is a great loss for all of us", said Kheel, "Hy was the leader of our firm, a wise counselor and a tenacioiusly loyal friend". In 2000 Battle Fowler merged with Paul Hastings, where he remained of counsel until the time of his death.
He was born in January 19, 1925 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Following his education at the Rec- tory School in Pomfret, CT, and the Choat School of Wallingford, CT. He graduated from Princeton Uni- versity in 1946. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in World War II and also served in the Korean War as a First Lieutenant and tank commander.
He served as a director of the Melville Corporation, Chase Bag Corporation, Rocky Mount Mills and Rocky Mount Cord Company. He was a member of the North Carolina Society of Cincinnati. He was a lover of bird life and an avid conservationist. He spent many weeks each year in his cherished home in western Ireland.
In addition to his wife, Reine, he is survived by his brother Tom and four sons; Craig, David, John and Kemp, as well as seven grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled at Pineview Cemetery, Rocky Mount, NC at 4 p.m. April 13, 2002.
