Notes for Josephine Lea HARRISON

Lea Harrison Bolling of Bryn Mawr Lea Harrison Bolling, 86, died peacefully on November 30, 2015 at Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, her home since 2002. Born to Joseph Harrison Jr. and Lucretia Heckscher Harrison, she grew up in Ardmore, PA. She attended Haverford Friends School and graduated from The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr in 1947. In 1951 Lea married Charles Lanier Bolling; they raised four children and many animals in Rosemont, PA, where they lived for nearly 50 years. Lea was a dedicated alumna of Shipley and longtime member of its Alumni Board; in 2012, she received the Shipley Alumni Service Award. She was proud not only to be a Shipley graduate, but a Shipley parent (two daughters) and grandparent (three granddaughters). An avid gardener, Lea grew all kinds of flowering plants and harvested her own vegetables and berries, preserving them for winter. She was active in The Gardeners Garden Club and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for many years. Through her involvement in The Garden Club of America, she developed a lifelong interest in environmental conservation. Lea began volunteering at The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Philadelphia, one of the first urban environmental education centers in the country, not long after its inception in 1965. Through the Center’s Project T.R.E.N.D., sponsored by The Garden Club of America, she taught natural science and ecology to inner city Philadelphia elementary school students. In 2009, she and other members of Project T.R.E.N.D. received The Schuylkill Center’s Henry Meigs Environmental Leadership Award in recognition of their instrumental work. A passionate advocate for conservation legislation, Lea was a life member of The Nature Conservancy. She volunteered tirelessly in support of its mission, serving as a member of its Pennsylvania Board of Trustees from 1985 - 2007. Lea and her family spent part of every summer on Nantucket Island, MA. She loved finding new ways to prepare the bounty from family outings - bluefish, bass, and beach plums galore. Lea is survived by her children: Polly Bolling, Lea (David) Johnson, Charles (Karen) Bolling Jr., Jay (Kelly) Bolling; six grandchildren; and brother Steve Harrison. She is predeceased by her husband; sisters, Tenny Marshall and Peggy Calvert; and brother Joseph Harrison III. A memorial service for family and friends will be held Saturday, January 9, at 11 a.m., at Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Rd, Bryn Mawr, Pa 19010. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy Pennsylvania Chapter, P. O. Box 6014, Albert Lea, MN 56007 or The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, 8480 Hagy’s Mill Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19128. Stuard FH - Ardmore
