Notes for Julian McIlvaine MARSHALL
Julian McIlvaine Marshall, 84, who had a lifelong interest in beagling and was associated with the Ardrossan Beagles of Villanova, died of Parkinson's disease and congestive heart failure Friday at his home at the Quadrangle in Haverford.
Mr. Marshall served several times as chairman of the hunt committee for Ardrossan and was a former president and chairman of the Bryn Mawr Hound Show, the oldest hound show in the United States, said his wife of 56 years, Henrietta "Tenny" Harrison Marshall.
He was also the former president of McCrea Associates of Philadelphia, an agency specializing in national Yellow Pages advertising.
Mr. Marshall was born in The Plains, Va. He was an accomplished equestrian as a boy. At 16, he rode in the Virginia Gold Cup and in many steeplechase, a sport that he continued to enjoy after moving to this area.
He graduated from the Stuyvesant School in Virginia and moved to Philadelphia when he was 18. In 1945, he joined the Reuben H. Donnelley Corp.
In 1961, he and two partners formed McCrea Associates in Philadelphia. The advertising company was sold in 1987.
His first love, Mrs. Marshall said, was beagling.
"He was a fox hunter as a young man and always said beagling was the poor man's fox hunting because you went on foot instead of riding," Mrs. Marshall said.
Mr. Marshall was a descendant of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall.
He was a member of the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary since 1941.
During World War II, he served in the infantry with the 87th Division of the Third Army, first as a platoon leader and then as a member of the staff of the 345th Infantry Regiment. Mr. Marshall attained the rank of first lieutenant. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Bronze Star.
He was a member of the Racquet Club of Philadelphia and a former president of the Mill Dam Club of Wayne.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Marshall is survived by sons, John R. and Stevens H.; daughters, Elizabeth R. and Julia Marshall Milone; and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood and New Gulph Roads, Bryn Mawr.
Burial will be private.
