A local firefighter, EMT, former state trooper and soon-to-be father was killed in a motorcycle crash Wednesday in Delaware County.
Nicholas P. "Nikos" Kolokithas, 33, of Downingtown, was heading east on Route 322 in Upper Chichester about 7:30 a.m. when he reportedly drove on the road's shoulder to pass several vehicles, police said.
As Kolokithas was passing the vehicles, a full-size van heading westbound made a left-hand turn onto Bethel Avenue, police said. At the intersection, police said Kolokithas' motorcycle hit the passenger side of the van.
The crash is still under investigation.
Kolokithas was a firefighter with First West Chester Fire Company and Alert Fire Company in Downingtown as well as an EMT with Good Fellowship Ambulance in West Chester.
His wife of two years, Stephanie, is expecting their first child in September, friends said.
Bill Wells, executive director of Good Fellowship Ambulance, said Thursday that Kolokithas had been with the company since 2000.
"I just had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Nick not too long ago," Wells said. "He was an asset. He was very level-headed. He was somebody who was always willing to go out of his way to help someone."
Kolokithas was a CPR instructor and part-time supervisor for eight years at Good Fellowship Ambulance. Of the 120 active volunteers, there are only about 15 supervisors at the company, Wells said.
"It is an elite group and he was able to progress to that group quickly," Wells said. "He's definitely going to be somebody who's going to be sorely missed."
Wells said he learned of Kolokithas' death while driving on vacation.
"I pulled over to the side of the road. The emotion I felt was sorrow because I knew how happy he was to become a father for the first time. He was very much looking forward to it," Wells said.
Gregg Nelms, assistant fire chief at Alert Fire Company, said Kolokithas was a member of the company's building and fundraising committees where he brought fresh ideas.
"He was a very nice guy, approachable and intelligent. He thought outside the box," Nelms said. "He was easygoing and a heck of a nice guy."
As a member of the building committee, Nelms said Kolokithas brought his experience from Good Fellowship and made suggestions to help Alert utilize existing space and cut costs.
"Our thoughts go out to his family. It's a tragic loss for us," Nelms said.
Kolokithas was an active firefighter with First West Chester before moving to Downingtown. After the move, he remained a member of the company.
Scott Joblin, a captain at First West Chester, said Kolokithas' work ethic was "impeccable."
"He was a go-to guy. It was a pleasure to work with him," Joblin said. "You would never meet a nicer guy. He never had a problem with anybody. If he was ever upset, you'd never know it."
Joblin said members of First West Chester are in shock this week. In an e-mail, Joblin urged his members to connect with their loved ones.
"You never know what's going to happen," Joblin said. "Sometimes it's all gone before you know it."
Kolokithas was born in Carlisle. He graduated from Shippensburg University in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in law enforcement and criminal justice. He worked for Witmer Associates in Coatesville for four years. He was also a state trooper at the Avondale barracks for five years.
