Notes for Colgate Whitehead III DARDEN
Colgate W. Darden III LEXINGTON - Dr. Colgate Whitehead Darden III was born in Norfolk in 1930 and passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. Colgate W. Darden Jr. and Constance S. duPont. He attended Granby High School, Deerfield Academy and the University of Virginia, graduating with a BA in electrical engineering in 1953 and MA in physics in 1954. He received his doctorate in nuclear physics from MIT in 1959. He worked at the Savannah River National Laboratory in South Carolina from 1959-1964, and from 1964-1994 as professor of physics at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. During this period, he participated in several U.S. government projects including Los Alamos National Laboratory, Fermilab, and DESY Laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. He received the Russell Research Award for the USC Educational Foundation in 1986. He was active in his community establishing the New Morning Foundation and served on many boards including the Institute of Poverty and Deprivation, the Salvation Army, the State Commission on Higher Education, Heathwood Hall School, and the South Carolina State Museum Foundation. Throughout his life he loved flying. He was a world class mechanic and could fix anything, as his collection of old airplanes could attest. Antique airplane fly-ins were favorite occasions. He enjoyed rebuilding antique cars and from a very early age was a ham radio enthusiast. As a boy he built crystal radio sets and Tesla coils in the basement, and was a user of the early internet. Classical music was another joy in his life. He played the piano, and was a long time supporter of the Columbia Symphony. He leaves his wife of 37 years, Barbara B. Darden; four children, Elizabeth Darden, Constance Darden-Young, Colgate Darden IV and Dorothea Coves-Darden; his sister, Irene Field; and two grandchildren, Jasmine and Tristan Young.
