ROBERT F. CHAPMAN
CHEMICAL ENGINEER, 80 Robert F. Chapman, 80, a retired chemical engineer, died of a heart attack on Friday at his residence at Foulkeways, a retirement community in Gwynedd, Montgomery County. Before moving to Gwynedd four years ago, he had lived in Chestnut Hill for 52 years.
Mr. Chapman, a chemical engineer with Atlantic Richfield and Arco Chemical for 38 years, worked on a variety of projects in research and development, including the development of synthetic hydrocarbons, shale-oil exploration and evaluation, and international licensing.
He traveled extensively in the 1970s, leading teams that initiated manufacturing joint ventures in Algeria, Russia and China. After he retired in 1981, he was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and for Meals on Wheels.
Along the way, he and his wife raised four children of great accomplishment. His son, William E. 2d, is the former president of the Kemper Retirement Plans Group. His daughter Diana Walsh is the president of Wellesley College; another daughter, Sally Chapman, is a professor of chemistry at Barnard College; and a third daughter, Marie Carroll, is chief financial officer of the beer division of Anheuser Busch.
Born in Germantown, Mr. Chapman was a 1936 graduate of William Penn Charter School and in 1940 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and Alpha Kappa Sigma.
He was a varsity swimmer and captain of the water polo team.
Mr. Chapman also was a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
In addition to his four children, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gwen Jenkins Chapman and five grandchildren.
Services will be private.
