Notes for George Frederick Jr. TYLER
GEORGE F. TYLER JR.
EX-HEAD OF ZOO BOARD, 83 George F. Tyler Jr., 83, of Chestnut Hill, a retired government executive and former president of the board of the Philadelphia Zoo, died of burns Saturday at Crozer Chester Medical Center.
Mr. Tyler was burned over much of his body Friday when his clothing caught fire while he was lighting a cigarette after breakfast.
Mr. Tyler, whose parents owned the land later donated for Tyler Arboretum in Delaware County, attended St. Mark's School in Southboro, Mass., and graduated from Harvard in 1938. During World War II, he was with the Army in North Africa, Italy and France.
After the war, he spent several years in government service with missions in Greece and Yugoslavia. Later, he worked at the U.S. Embassy for NATO Affairs in London and Paris, and in Indian and Latin American affairs.
After returning to Philadelphia permanently in the late 1950s or early 1960s, he became active in civic affairs, spending time as president of the board at the zoo and president of the board of managers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
For a time, he was co-publisher of the Times-Chronicle, a weekly newspaper in Jenkintown.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine D. Tyler; sons, George F. 3d and Michael E.; daughter, Carol T. Noble; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Church of St. Martin in the Fields, 8000 St. Martin's Lane, Germantown. Burial is private.
