Notes for John Lorimer MCCLENAHAN
Dr. McClenahan was born in Assiut, Egypt on April 25, 1915, the son of the late Dr. Robert Stewart McClenahan and the late Janet Wallace McClenahan.
He graduated from Yale University in 1937 with a B.A., and from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School with an M.D. in 1941. He did a residency in radiology at the N.Y. Hospital - Cornell Medical Center, and then in academic medicine, also at the N.Y. Hospital.
In 1956, he opened a solo practice in Philadelphia, Pa. He retired from radiology in 1983.
He was editor and contributor to Transactions and Studies, a journal about medicine and the history of medicine at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He authored approximately 60 articles on both medical and non-medical topics.
He also wrote two books, and edited a third.
He was co-founder and president of the Wissahickon Hospice of Philadelphia.
He was affiliated with many professional and community organizations in Philadelphia and then in Richmond after his marriage to Mary Tyler Freeman Cheek in 1993.
Dr. McClenahan was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond.
In addition to Mrs. Cheek, he was predeceased by his wife, Henrietta Sturgis Bullitt; and by Helene Consuelo Gardner.
Dr. McClenahan is survived by his children, Mollie Starrett (his first wife), John Spencer McClenahan (Joan) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Susan Stockdale (Parker) of the U.S. Virgin Islands; four grandsons, Jeffrey McClenahan (Hollie) of Boulder, Colo., Aaron Stockdale and Justin Stockdale, both of Austin, Texas, and Parker Brighton Stockdale of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight stepchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mary Tyler McClenahan Childcare Center, c/o Friends Association for Children, 2700 Bensley Commons Blvd., Richmond, Va. 23237. Graveside services will be held at a later date.
