Notes for Mary HOPKINS
MARY 'POLLY' (nee Hopkins), 96 of Gladwyne, PA died Tuesday, June 28, 2016. She is survived by daughters Charlotte H. Biddle, Elaine B. Whitman (Bradford), Lydia B. Thomas and daughter-in-law Linda Erle Biddle. She is predeceased by her son Nicholas III and husband Nicholas, Jr. to whom she was married for 72 years. She delighted in the company of her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and was a devoted wife and mother.
A graduate of Westover School in Middlebury, CT, she served as president of the Athletic Association. Hobbies included crewel embroidery, needlepoint and reading. During summers in Prouts Neck, ME and Jamestown, RI, she cultivated her love of the outdoors through tennis and golf. She and her husband enjoyed many adventures as they traveled the world. She was president of the Philadelphia Area Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America and, president of The Gardeners - affiliate of The Garden Club of America. She was on the Board of Trustees of the Agnes Irwin School, Westover School and The Acorn Club and served on the advisory committee to refurbish the Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg, PA under Governor Richard Thornburgh. She continued to learn throughout her life, studying French cooking and graduating from the Barnes Foundation's course on the Philosophy and Appreciation of Art. Contributions in her memory may be made to Westover School, 1237 Whittemore Road, P.O. Box 847, Middlebury, CT 06762. A memorial service for Mrs. Biddle will be held in the fall.
