Notes for John DARLINGTON
John T Darlington, avid golfer, sailor, and lover of family, died April 10, 2013 from mesothelioma at home surrounded by his devoted wife Amy McGee Darlington, his childhood friend Nan Keiser and some of his siblings and step-children. He was descended from the Darlington Family that settled in Chester County as part of a William Penn Land Grant and followed a long held family tradition of service in the US Navy.
John met this final life challenge with the same grace, humor and gentleness with which he tackled most of life.
John loved tennis, golf, sailing and motorcycles and would draft anyone he could into sharing his activities. His generous nature was legendary; he talked big and loved bigger. Whether teaching his wife to sail, his grandson to bat balls, his brothers and step-son to improve their golf game, he gave himself with full gusto and endless encouragement. John coached and taught sailing to numerous Special Olympians and worked as a contractor in the Energy Audit business.
Born John Mary Darlington because his mother was making bargains with God, he eventually took matters into his own hands and legally changed his name to John Thomas, using his confirmation name.
His sparkle and enthusiasm and most especially his way of verbalizing his world will be missed by all who knew him. He loved to say, "The best thing Nature provides you on a sunny day is the sun." It is how he lived; sun, wind, and optimism.
John, "Jumper" as he was known to his family and friends as a youth, is survived by his wife Amy, his beloved mother, Joan T Darlington, his siblings, Richard SB Darlington, Mimi Darlington, Joan Klothe, Lucy Darlington, Phoebe Darlington, Hugh Darlington, Anne Martin, Peter Darlington and Bill Darlington, his dear friend John W. Herron, his step-children, Noelle Maloney and Gavin Frangipane, whom he raised, Dan and Katie McGee, Carey Graviet and his most adored grandchildren, Wyatt Graviet and Griffin McGee. John is predeceased by his brother Christopher.
A memorial will be held on Saturday April 27th at his sister's house in West Chester, PA at 1:00 p.m. For directions email ldarlington@@mac.com or call 215-735-3503.
