Notes for William Irwin Jr. MIRKIL
William Irwin Mirkil Jr. of Gladwyne, Pa., died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at the Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was 80.
Mr. Mirkil was born Oct. 11, 1922, the son of the late Frances Betz Woolsey and William I. Mirkil of Philadelphia. He attended The William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and St. George's School in Newport, R.I. He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Mirkil was a real estate broker for 38 years, specializing in estates, farms and builders on the Main Line, as well as in the Radnor Hunt and Pickering Hunt areas.
A member of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, Mr. Mirkil served in North China and the South Pacific, participating in the Okinawa campaign. He was promoted from the ranks to the grade of lieutenant. His outfit, the 1st Marines, was awarded the Presidential Merit Citation.
Mr. Mirkil served on the board of the University City Associates, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, for 20 years and on the board of Dunwoody Village for 21 years. He was the former chairman of the Newtown Township Planning Commission and a former governor of the Main Line Board of Realtors.
Mr. Mirkil and his wife, Carolyn English Mirkil, were longtime vacationers to Palm Beach, where they were members of the Bath and Tennis Club. His family has been affiliated with the club for the past 50 years.
In the Philadelphia area, he was a member of the Gulph Mills Golf Club, Merion Cricket Club, St. Anthony's Club and the Rolling Rock Club of Ligonier, Pa.
Mr. Mirkil is survived by his wife; his brother, John M. Mirkil of Villanova, Pa.; two daughters, Sandra Mirkil Connolly of Charlottesville, Va., and Helen Mirkil Peterson of Lower Gwynedd, Pa.; four grandsons, Edward F.L. Terzian Jr., Andrew Mirkil Terzian, William R. Taylor and Thomas M. Taylor; a stepson, Dwight E. Chalker of Honolulu; and a stepsister, Ruth T. Hallowell of Bryn Mawr.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Oakland Cemetery in West Chester, Pa.
