ELLEN DIXON CLAFFY , 74, a needlepoint designer, died Wednesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. She lived at the Waverly Heights retirement home in Gladwyne. Raised in Villanova, Mrs. Claffy was schooled in Bermuda, where her mother took her during winters because she had an ear problem. Later, she attended the the Hanna Moore Academy in Baltimore. She then began designing needlepoint for Mrs. Sinkler Needlepoint Studio, a now-defunct studio in Radnor that was the place for needlepoint in its era. A lover of nature, art and people, Mrs. Claffy incorporated these interests into her designs. She also worked as a freelance model for Wanamakers, Bonwit Teller, Nan Duskin and the Blum Store in Center City, and Mrs. Franklin's in Haverford. In 1941, she married Lt. John Wren of the U.S. Navy, a blimp pilot, and moved around the country with him. They were later divorced, and she married Arthur Claffy . In the last 15 years, she had begun designing needlepoint again for the Creative Way in Bryn Mawr. Mrs. Claffy also served as secretary and registrar for the Philadelphia chapter of the Colonial Dames of America. Survivors: daughters Nancy W. Richards and Ellen C. Barner; a brother, and four grandchildren. Services: memorial, 1 p.m. Saturday. Church of the Redeemer, New Gulph and Pennswood Roads, Bryn Mawr.
