Notes for Harriet Hoffman WINDLE

According to her obituary, she died at the home of her son, Frank, 9 Pennsylvania Ave. She had been in poor health for the past few years. "The town lost one of its best known citizens last week in the death of Mrs. Hattie McCorkle, the indomitable spirit that ruled over the little restaurant on Center Square for almost half a century. Though frequently helped by her husband and a daughter-in-law, she did most of the work at the famous little restaurant of which she was very proud and all times maintained complete discipline among her customers. A patron only had to discover once that McCorkles was no place for horse play. Mrs. McCorkle took care of such occasional offenders in no uncertain terms. While she could handle the grown-ups with a firm hand, she had her weakness for children. Most of the kids who came within her orbit soon found out that Aunt Hattie was a soft touch for some candy or a toy and that she would even intervene with their parents to see that they got some of the things they wanted." She was a member of St. James Church.
