Notes for Charles Lea HANCOCK

Charles Lea Hancock, 75, of Bryn Mawr, an amateur singer and retired advertising executive, died Tuesday at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Hancock graduated from the Haverford School in September 1946, four months after being discharged from the Army.
He had enlisted on June 20, 1944, before finishing high school, and served in the 14th Armored Division in France and Germany, and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded twice and received a Purple Heart with an oak-leaf cluster.
Mr. Hancock graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950, and worked as an advertising executive at SmithKline Beecham Corp. from 1950 to 1954. He then worked in advertising and marketing at Gray & Rogers, a Philadelphia firm, from 1954 to 1963; at First Pennsylvania Bank, 1963 to 1968; and at Western Savings Bank, 1968 to 1978. He was a self-employed salesman from 1978 until his retirement 13 years later.
Mr. Hancock had a passion for singing, using his booming voice to land key roles in Gilbert and Sullivan productions with the Savoy Company of Philadelphia, the oldest amateur theater club in the world.
Mr. Hancock also served as president of the Savoy Company in 1965 and 1966, and a member of the company's management from 1967 to 1969.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Melissa; daughters Katharine Francis of Malvern and Suzanne Ross of Devon; a son, Charles L. Jr. of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood and New Gulf Roads, Bryn Mawr.
