Notes for Barbara Ann HARTSHORNE

Barbara Colameco, 53, of Swedesboro, who co-founded Wellshire Farms Inc. with her husband and helped the company stay afloat financially, died of breast cancer Thursday at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia.
After Lou Colameco's newly formed spiral ham business went bankrupt in 1994, he was nervous about starting another business. But Mrs. Colameco stood behind him and counseled him on the financial end, and in 1996, three Wellshire Farm Inc. meat products went on the market.
Now the family-owned operation, which produces fully cooked all-natural meat, makes more than 200 items that sell at grocery stores throughout the country.
"She always stayed in the background, but she was just as important, maybe even more," her husband said.
Mrs. Colameco handled payroll and insurance, and stayed on top of all the company's finances.
In recent years, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, Mrs. Colameco helped organize fund-raising events for the Greater Philadelphia Cancer Transportation Fund, a cause she founded through her chemotherapy sessions.
"She said, 'Lou, people aren't coming back to get their chemo because they don't have a ride,' " her husband recalled.
Mrs. Colameco also helped organize walks, a pig roast and a Monte Carlo night, with proceeds going toward transportation vouchers for chemo patients, her husband said.
Mrs. Colameco was born and raised in Malvern and graduated from Great Valley High School in 1974. She received a bachelor's degree in finance from West Chester University in 1978.
She married Lou Colameco in 1986. The couple moved to Swedesboro in 1990.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Colameco is survived by daughter Jessica, sons Matthew and Thomas; parents Lyndel and Lois Hartshorne, and a brother.
