Notes for Gladys Emma ERVIN

Daughter of William Edgar Ervin and Mary Elizabeth Thompson.
Married Richard du Pont Chichester on 17 May 1930. They were the parents of Richard Jr. Gladys and Richard divorced at home point after 1940; Richard remarried in the 70s.
Gladys Ervin Chichester, 93, died peacefully at home on Saturday, (August 11, 2001) surrounded by family members. Gladys was born on the family farm in Spencerville, MD, on June 22, 1908. She had many happy memories of childhood farm life with her parents, sister and three brothers, all of home predeceased her. She worked as a patent secretary in Washington, D.C., until she married Richard D. Chichester and moved to Wilmington, DE, in 1930. Gladys lived on Woodlawn Avenue for 68 years, worked as the parish secretary at Trinity Episcopal Church, and was a longtime member of Immanuel Episcopal Church in Wilmington, DE. In 1998 she moved to the Herbert T. Clark Congregate Facility in Glastonbury, Gladys was a devoted mother to her son, Richard, who died in 1984, and her daughter, Mary with whom she lived at the time of her death. She will be treasured in the memories of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Ahlgren of Glastonbury; four grandchildren and their spouses, Melanie and John Samardza of Townsend, DE; Liza and Jim DeMichele of Boston, MA; Stephen and Carole Chichester of Atlanta, GA; and David Schwartz of High Point, NC; her step grandchildren, Scott and Alison Ahlgren of Urbana, IL; and Stephen Ahlgren of Tucson, AZ; and her great grandchildren, Andrew, William and Kate. She also leaves ten nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. Gladys touched our lives though her enduring cheerfulness, her welcoming personality and her abiding appreciation of life. The family thanks Hospice and Palliative Care of CT in East Hartford for their gentle care given to Gladys. Her funeral will be held Saturday, August 18, 11 a.m., in Immanuel Episcopal Church in Wilmington, DE, followed by a burial service at 4:30 p.m., in Woodside Cemetery in Ashton, MD.
