Notes for Robert Allen MARCH
Robert A. "Rabbit" March, 70, a former Lukens Steel worker and longtime volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Coatesville, died Monday at his home in Downingtown.
Born in Coatesville, Mr. March was a 1936 graduate of Coatesville High School. He lived in the city most of his life, moving to Downingtown within the last year.
He was employed at Lukens Steel in Coatesville for 43 years, working as a welder for 33 years and for the last 10 years in the test laboratory. He retired from the company in 1980.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945 and was wounded in the Battle of Okinawa.
After the war, Mr. March donated much of his time to doing volunteer work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. According to his sister, Marion M. Tritt, his time at the medical center spanned more than 30 years.
"For many years he was there and did things with the men, just talking with them or helping with concerts and parties," Tritt said. "He got many plaques for the hundreds of hours he put in there. That was his thing, his way of serving."
Mr. March's sister said he had gotten his peculiar nickname of "Rabbit" in his youth, when he played baseball at Coatesville High School and later in the Coatesville Twilight League. She said most people his age knew him only as ''Rabbit."
"When he ran, he seemed to hop like a rabbit and would get there pretty quick," she said. "They started calling him that, and it stuck."
A Protestant, Mr. March also was a member of the Valley Forge Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter 1777. He served as state commander of the order
from 1979 to 1981.
He was a member of the VFW Post 287 of Coatesville, the Disabled American Veterans, the Marine Corps League, the Lukens Veterans Guild, the Coatesville Star of Hope Odd Fellows, and the United Steelworkers of America. He was a life member of the Brandywine Fire Co.
In addition to his sister, he is survived by his wife, Florence Way March, and his mother, Helen M. Brown March.
A funeral was held Thursday in the Maclean-Chamberlain Funeral Home, Coatesville. Burial was in Grove Methodist Cemetery, West Whiteland.
