Notes for Walter Savery PAINTER
Walter Savery Painter of Kennett Square Walter ("Bud", "Walt") Savery Painter of Kennett Square, died peacefully at the age of 95 on Nov. 28, 2012, at his residence in the Kendal-Crosslands Communities. Born on May 4, 1917, in West Chester, Walter was the son of the late Walter Painter and the late Marion Savery Painter. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor Johnson Painter, and his one sibling, Elizabeth Painter Conard. Walter grew up in West Chester, where he was active in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the highest rank attainable, Eagle Scout, with additional advancement to Gold Palm. He played both the clarinet and saxophone and was a member of the junior high school marching band. Graduating from Westtown School in 1935, Walter, known as "Horse", excelled academically and athletically, participating in basketball, track, baseball and soccer. Walter matriculated at Penn State University with a degree in chemical engineering in 1939 where he was a member of Sigma Phi Alpha. In his senior year, Walter was named to the All American Soccer Team. More importantly, he met his future wife, Eleanor Johnson, a student and graduate of Swarthmore College. They were married a year later, in 1940, and enjoyed 67 years together until Eleanor's passing in 2007. The couple briefly resided in Sparrows Point, Md., where Walter began his 43 year career with Bethlehem Steel Corporation beginning in their Looper Training Program in 1939. The young couple then moved to Towson, Md. while Walter commuted to Sparrows Point holding various operating positions before becoming Superintendent of the Sheet and Strip Division. In 1965, Walter was transferred to Bethlehem, Pa. He finished his career on the staff of the vice president of operations for Bethlehem Steel until his retirement in 1982. Walter enjoyed both tennis and golf at Sparrows Point Country Club and then at Saucon Valley Country Club. He and his wife were avid travelers throughout their marriage. Upon retirement, Walter volunteered his services at St. Luke's Hospital, gardened, continued travelling, golfed and enjoyed his growing family. The couple moved in 1994 to Kendal-Crosslands Communities in Kennett Square. The Painter/Savery family has historical ties to the Ellerslie home on the property of Crosslands and to the area nearby known as Painters Crossroads in Chester County. Walter was a devoted father to his son, Stephen Savery Painter and wife, Kelly, of Baltimore, Md., son, Carl Eric Painter and wife, Roxann, of Greenwich, Conn., and daughter, Anne Painter Fouch and husband, Ranthus, of Weston, Fla. He is also survived by grandchildren, Sidney Painter Hillman and husband, Steven, of London, England, and Elizabeth Painter Fouch of Baltimore, Md.; and great-grandsons, Ethan Charles Savery Hillman and Benjamin Henry Thomas Hillman of London, England.
