Notes for Gideon Weidman LANDIS
MR. GIDEON W. LANDIS, of Newville, Pa., brother of Messrs. C. A. and H. S. Landis, this city, died at his home yesterday. He was in the 75th year of his age. His death was caused by inward infection of the leg, the glands of which dried up, causing trouble on the foot on which there had been a sore corn. He was confined to his bed since January 1. Mr. Landis was born in New Holland, Lancaster county, Pa., but for 46 years lived in Newville, where he was engaged in the jewelry business for that period. He was once a school director and was active in the Church of God and the Sunday school. Recently he was given recognition at Philadelphia for having been 50 years in continuous Sunday school work. He fought in the Civil War and was a member of the famous Ninth Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Newville and the Odd Follows Lodge of Shippensburg. Besides his wife, Mr. Landis is survived by 7 children, three sons and four daughters. Four brothers and a sister survive: I. D. and E. D. Landis, of Coatesville; H. S. and C. A. Landis, of Frederick, and Mrs. Emma Shapely, of Mechanicsburg, Pa. The funeral will be held from his late home tomorrow morning, and internment in the Newville cemetery.
