Notes for Margaret E. WHITAKER
Margaret Whitaker Garrett of Bar Harbor, Maine Margaret Whitaker Garrett, 88, died in Bar Harbor, Maine, September 28, 2012. She was born February 28, 1924, in Abington, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ralph Waldo Whitaker and Marion Elizabeth (nee Clark) Whitaker. She attended schools in Jenkintown and Abington and graduated from Abington High School. She was admitted to the University of Pennsylvania, but with United States entry into World War II, it was felt that the war effort was more important; therefore after graduation from what is now Pierce College, she became a secretary at the Atlantic Refining Company in Philadelphia. Following the War, she became executive secretary to the Rt. Reverend William P. Remington, Suffragan Bishop of Pennsylvania. She received great enjoyment from gardening and flower arranging, having won several awards at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She was a member of the Rosemont Garden Club and a past president of the Bar Harbor Garden Club. She was an officer of the Northeast Harbor Women's Literary Club, and she was also a member of the Acorn Club of Philadelphia. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church and in retirement, was Clerk of the Vestry at St. Saviour's Church in Bar Harbor. In addition she was a delegate to the Diocesan Convention of the Diocese of Maine, and Lay Alternate to the Synod of New England. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Edwin A. Garrett III; a son Edwin A. Garrett IV; daughters, Sarah Berube and husband Gregory of Nashua, New Hampshire; and Hannah Bannon and husband Roger of Fortson, Georgia; and her sister, Mrs. James E. Bryan of Abington; as well as three grandchildren, Lauren Bannon, Nathaniel Bannon, and Rebecca Berube; a surviving nephew, five great-nieces, a great-nephew, and eight great-great-nieces and a great-great-nephew.
