Notes for James D. BAILEY

James D. Bailey passed away on September 5, 2012, after a brief illness. He was 92. A lifelong Chester County resident, Jim was born in Cochranville, Pennsylvania, on August 17, 1920, to Elwood and Estella Bailey.
He attended West Fallowfield High School, during which time he also worked in the family butcher shop. In World War II he served in the Navy as a cook on a submarine that patrolled the East Coast. Jim eventually went to work for his brother Willard in the insurance business, later buying the business and naming it Bailey Insurance Management. His office was a familiar sight on Locust Street in Oxford for nearly forty years.
Jim's first wife, Marian, passed away in the late 1950's. A few years later he met Anne Murphy, married her in 1962, and gained a daughter, Nancy Murphy. After residing more than thirty years in their unique home on Lancaster Avenue, the Baileys moved to Jenner's Pond Retirement Village in West Grove, where they made many new and lasting friendships.
Jim was devoted to his family, his church, and his community. He was a founding member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, was active in the Oxford Rotary Club, and served as volunteer and board member of the Oxford Neighborhood Services Center. He was also a member of the Oxford Lodge #353 F. & A.M. and Rajah Shrine, Reading, PA. As a volunteer for the American Red Cross, he made countless trips to Philadelphia to deliver blood donations collected in Oxford. He and Anne enjoyed sports car rallies in the Brandywine area, and even won several prizes driving his red Austin Healey. His greatest sports love, however, was playing golf, and he was a member of Chantilly Manor for many years.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian; their son, Alan; granddaughter, Cheryl; and his brother, Willard Bailey. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Anne, daughter, Nancy (Daniel Ruth) granddaughters; Susannah, Margaret, and Melissa; and daughter-in-law Rose Pucher.
