Notes for William Gawthrop SHOEMAKER
William Gawthrop "Shoe" Shoemaker, 80, of Hendersonville, N.C., and formerly of Media, a decorated World War II pilot and retired Boeing employee, died Nov. 19 in North Carolina.
Born in Kennett Square, Mr. Shoemaker graduated from Wilmington Friends School in 1937. In 1941, he received an engineering degree from Cornell University, where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity.
During World War II, Mr. Shoemaker piloted a B-24 Liberator, dubbed the "Shoo Shoo Baby," on missions as wing commander in the 464th Squadron of the U.S. Air Force. For his service, Mr. Shoemaker was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He served as president of the Media Lions Club and as auditor for the borough of Media. Mr. Shoemaker began his career at Piasecki Helicopters and retired from Boeing after 30 years. He was a member of Kennett Friends Meeting and the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Shoemaker loved to travel and sought adventure around the world.
Survivors: Daughters, Susan S. Norton of Hendersonville, N.C., Janice S. Engle of Hockessin, Del., Mary Beth Shoemaker of Evanston, Ill., Anne S. Nichols of Roseville, Calif.; their mother, Doris G. Shotwell of Wilmington, Del; brother, Charles G. Shoemaker of Kennett Square; sister, Mary Louise Turner Lind of Lake Oswego, Ore.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Friday, Kennett Friends Meeting, 122 Sickles St., Kennett Square.
