Notes for Rosa Laird HAYWARD
Rosa Hayward Jones, loving wife and mother, loyal and helpful friend, naturally beautiful, refreshingly funny and utterly lovable, Rosa Laird Hayward Jones died of cancer January 1, 2006 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT. She was 60 years old.
Rosa Jones was born December 26, 1945 in Wilmington, DE, the 3rd child of Rosa Laird Hayward and Nathan Hayward Jr. (1909-1953). She grew up in Wilmington, attended Tower Hill School, and went on to graduate from Oldfields School in Glencoe, MD in 1964. She attended Mt. Vernon Jr. College and later received her teaching degree from Trinity College in Washington, DC before becoming an elementary school teacher. She married Christopher George Lewis Jones in 1976 and 2 years later, they moved to Hamden, CT. In Hamden, she worked as a substitute teacher and volunteered in the Fair Haven Soup Kitchen. In 1985, she began her long tenure on the Town of Hamden's Beautification Committee. Her tenure as chair produced new litter enforcement regulations and the installations of "Welcome to Hamden" signs, as well as new landscaping on numerous traffic islands. She was recognized as a Hamden "Notable" for these efforts and in 2005 was honored by the Legislative Council by the dedication of the Rosa H. Hones Square" at the intersection of Ridge Road and State Street. She served as trustee and treasurer of the Hamden Land Conservation Trust until her death. It was Rosa's quiet but very personal way of listening to, helping and encouraging both close friends and acquaintances that made her a truly beloved member of the communities of Hamden and Wilmington. She was a nurturer who adopted many strays in her time – cats, dogs and people. She treated them the same way she treated everyone who came into her life – with endless hours of caring and affection. Considerate, gracious, self-effacing, and always offering a kind word for everyone, she left those with whom she had contact with smiles on their faces.
Mrs. Jones' survivors include her husband, Chris; their son, Nicholas, of Charleston, SC; her mother, Rosa Hayward McDonald, and stepfather, Ellice McDonald, Jr. of Wilmington, DE; her sister, Nancy "Sunny" Hayward, and her husband, Richard Johnson, of New York City, NY; her brother, Nathan Hayward, III, and his wife, Marilyn; her brother, Pierre Hayward, and his wife, Tina; and 4 nephews, Nathan, IV, Geordie, Laird and Brad Hayward, all of Wilmington, DE.
A service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 14, at Christ Church, Buck Road, Greenville, DE. A private burial will take place in Wilmington, DE.
