Norman M. Wood, newspaperman-conservationist, died Saturday evening in Chester County Hospital shortly after he had been stricken with a heart attack in West Chester.
He was a resident of Coatesville for nearly 50 years. He was 75 years of age last September 25th.
Accompanied by his wife, he had gone to the West Chester athletic field to witness the Coatesville-West Chester football game, He walked away from the game and collapsed on Chestnut street. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died one hour later.
A certificate of death by heart failure was issued by Coroner Creston Shoemaker.
Wood, a well-known figure in the county and state through his work and affiliation with sportsmen, was the son of the late William Horace Wood and Eleanor Baldwin Wood. He was born in Philadelphia in 1876, in a home right next door to Girard College.
At an early age, he was employed as a page boy for the late John Wanamaker, famous Philadelphia merchant. He later received his schooling at Marshallton and finally settled in West Chester, where he became a printer and reporter for the West Chester “Morning Republican”.
Following marriage, he came to Coatesville where, for a number of years he represented the Daily Local News, of West Chester, in reportorial work in this part of the county. He also was identified as a correspondent for the Philadelphia Press, North American, Recorder and Ledger.
Still later, through his political affiliation with the county Republican organization, he won appointment as a State game protector and, for 27 years represented the State Game Commission in wildlife conservation, finally serving as game supervisor and lecturer. He retired at the age of 62, two years after the Earle administration came into power in Harrisburg.
He then became identified with I. Plottle and Co., Scranton, and Thomas D. Murphy Co., Red Oak, Iowa, in the novelty advertising business.
He was the founder of the Chester County Rod and Gun Club, one of the State’s best-known sportsmen’s organizations. He was a staff member of the State Game News, a Member of the Philadelphia and Chester County Trapshooters Leagues, Yorklyn Gun Club, and various other outdoor associations.
He was a past-president and life member of Brandywine Fire Company. He was also a member of West Caln Grange. He was an Episcopalian by faith and was a member of the West Chester church.
He is survived by a widow, Laura Parker, of the Donoghue Apts., 13th avenue and Lincoln highway; a son, Waldemar P. Wood, of 323 E. Chestnut street; two brothers, Ralph E. Wood, of Media, and Fred L. Wood, 1152 Stirling street, Coatsville.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from Archie S. Maclean’s Funeral Home, 5th Ave. and Lincoln Hwy., Coatesville, on Wednesday, October 31, at 2 p.m. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening after 7 o’clock.
