Born September 24, 1927, in Haddonfield NJ, to Helen (nee Dewey) and Albert Stiles, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, then was drafted for service in the U.S. Army in 1946. He was recommended for duty in the Army Security Agency, a key component of Military Intelligence during the Cold War. After discharge in 1947, he partnered with future father-in-law Howard Wills, a pioneer in electrical contract-ing who introduced electricity to remote farmhouses in South Jersey and wired such unusual structures as the Log Cabin Lodge in Medford Lakes. Business expansion was interrupted when Al was drafted into the Army for a second time in 1952. He finished his military service in 1954 as First Lieutenant while stationed in Salzburg, Austria with wife Barbara. The partnership with Howard "Pop" Wills flourished in the post-war years to become one of the larger electrical contracting firms in Southern NJ. Remaining in business for more than 80 years, Wills and Stiles became known for its many loyal employees with decades of service to the company. Most notably, K. Herbert Jones began work with Al as a junior electrician in 1957, then went on to become Vice-President and General Manager, responsible for all daily operations of Wills and Stiles from 1981 until its close in 2008. Al held a passion for building, remodeling, and real estate development. Early residential projects include Pinecrest and Forest Glen, then later Ironstone Professional Office Center and Ironstone Village Shopping Center. Purchase and renovation of an old Maine camp - once used for training by Admiral Bird's polar exploration team - brought more than 30 joyous summers on the shores of Sebago Lake. Since 1987, winters were spent at John's Island Club, Vero Beach FL where he served on the tennis committee and was President of the Silver Moss Association. In retirement, a talent in oil painting emerged. His French impressionistic works were greatly admired at the annual John's Island Club art exhibits. Over the years Al served as a Director of Inter-boro Savings and Loan, Trustee and Treasurer of West Jersey Hospital Foundation, President of Medford-Vincentown Rotary Club, President of Burlington County Electric League, Director and Vice-President of the Board for Cadbury Life Care Community, and Chairman of the Trustees of Medford Meeting. He was a member of Tavistock Country Club, John's Island Club, Chevalier du Tastevin, and the Union League of Philadelphia where he served as President of the Double Six Table.
