Notes for Gilbert Stroud Jr. SCARBOROUGH

Gilbert S. Scarborough Jr., of Greenville, DE, passed away peacefully at the age of 86. Gil was born in Wilmington to Elsie (Warrington) and Gilbert Scarborough Sr. and was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School, Temple University and the American College.
He served his country as a Navigator in long range bombers during World War II and subsequently retired as a Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He started in the insurance business in 1949 under the tutelage of his uncle, Franklin Scarborough, and helped build and own Scarborough Agency, Inc. from which he retired as President in 1996.
Throughout his life Gil dedicated himself to his loving wife Ellen, their family, church and community. He was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and for over 30 years was actively involved in numerous Peninsula Conference Committees. In 1968 he became a member of the Board of Governors of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC and in 1987 was named an Honorary Trustee. He served as a Trustee of Wesley College for over 25 years and was Chairman from 1987 to 1991. His civic activities were extensive and included serving as President of the Alfred I duPont School district from 1966-1975 and President of the merged New Castle County Board of education from 1976 to 1980, a period of great turmoil and unrest as the county implemented court ordered busing. Gil was a Board member of Opportunity Center for over 30 years, serving as Chairman from 1972 to 1975, a director of The Grand Opera House for over 30 years and President from 1977 to 1980, a Board member of Neighborhood House, Geriatric Services of DE, United Way of DE, WHYY, a Lay member of the Supreme Court of DE Boards on Professional Responsibility and the Unauthorized Practice of Law and a long time member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Wilmington who honored him with their highest accolade, the John F. Newnam Award for "Service Above Self". In business he was the first President of the Delaware Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters and a Past President of the Life Underwriters Association of New Castle County who in 1968 presented him the Charles B. Palmer Award that represents high ethical standards, loyalty to associates and community leadership. Gil was an active Director of Artisans' Bank for 39 years. Over the years he received many awards and honors including the prestigious Delaware State Chamber of Commerce's Josiah Marvel Cup in 1980 in recognition of his "significant outstanding service to the state, community and society". He was the recipient of various and highly valued other awards including the Community Involvement Award from the Masonic Club of DE, the Community Service Award from the Delaware Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Educational Leadership award from the Delaware School Board Association, the Lifetime Achievement in Philanthropy Award from the National association of Fund Raising Executives and in 1993 Gil was the first recipient of the Opportunity Center's Annual Founders Award.
Gil was a lifetime member of the Granite-Corinthian Lodge #34 A.F. & A. M. beginning in 1947 and served as a President of both the Masonic Club of Delaware and the Masonic Hall Company. He was a lifetime member of the University & Whist Club and a member of Wilmington Country Club for 44 years. His most cherished moments were spending time with his family at their vacation home in Avalon, NJ, and in retirement, wintering in Bonita Springs, FL.
Gil is survived by Ellen, his wife of 63 years, a son Gilbert "Pete" Scarborough III (Joyce) and daughter, Beth DiSabatino (Larry). He was predeceased in death by his son John "Steve" Scarborough. In addition he has 5 grandchildren: Gilbert IV "Brett" (Laurie), Ryan, Michael (Cassie), Jeff, Kevin (Tina) and one great-grandchild Annabel. Gil will always be remembered as being totally devoted to his family, his community and his country. His sense of fairness, his optimistic nature, and his sense of humor were treasured by all who had the privilege to know him. These traits, along with his gentle manner, made for a very remarkable man.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 am on Monday, March 5 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road, Wilmington, DE, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will be private.
