COURIER TIMES

Horace A. Balderston loved meeting and speaking to new people.
"He had such a passion to talk to people, and it was never about him, it was always about you," said Delores Balderston, his wife of 51 years. "The first thing out of his mouth would be, "Where are you from?' and I can hear him saying that over and over.
"Horace would have been happy if you parked him in a chair on State Street in Newtown for anyone that would like to stop and want to talk. He might even yank you over to talk to him, because that was the way he was."
His wife said he was a loving, compassionate, kind and honest man. He also enjoyed baseball, especially the Yankees, and flower gardening.
"He had tried vegetables, but for a farmer, he had the worst luck with them," she said. "He grew corn once, and they turned out like those little corn cobs that you get in salads. We used to tease the heck out of him about that."
Mr. Balderston, 76, died May 11 from Alzheimer's disease. His wife said he was the last of the Balderston family who lived in the Dolington area since the 1700s.
He was born and raised on his family farm in the village. He lived in the Dolington area until moving to Yardley 51 years ago.
He was the bookkeeper with Balderston Brothers, where he went back and forth to two companies in Newtown Township and Dolington for more than 50 years.
"His co-workers used to kid him that if they painted the office window black where he did his work, he'd be in trouble, because he wouldn't be able to see all the people walk by. He liked to watch the world from his window," his wife said.
Mr. Balderston was a member of the Newtown Reliance Co. and Newtown Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was devoted to church and volunteered as much as he could until his health failed.
His wife said he was a thoughtful and giving man, and if he saw you outside working on a hot day, he'd bring you a glass of iced tea.
"Our son, Todd, was such a help with his father with his Alzheimer's, and I don't know what I would have done without him," she said. "It's a terrible disease to deal with.
"It's all a great loss, and we'll miss him very much. He was definitely the last of his kind." - Lisa Davidson, a freelance writer, can be reached at eagleschool02@@yahoo.com.
