Notes for Lorraine HOOVER
SHELBURNE, Vt. -- Lorraine Hoover Barstow, 77, died peacefully at her home Jan. 1, 1998, surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 28, 1920, in New York City, the daughter of Loring R. and Margaret R. Hoover. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and served in the Army during World War II. On June 4, 1945, she was married in Church of Christ Congregational, Norfolk, Conn., to Dr. Richard Iddings Barstow. A devoted wife and enthusiastic mother to her five children, she was also involved in the wider community of Norfolk where she lived for 50 years. In quiet ways, she worked for ecumenism, racial equality and social justice. She found joy and inspiration in the beauty of the natural world, imbuing in her children from the earliest age a knowledge and love of nature. In later years, her family grown, this appreciation found a new outlet in photography. She is survived by her husband, Richard, of Middlebury, Vt.; two daughters, Revell B. Allen of Randolph, Vt. and Noel Barstow of Sparkill, N.Y.; three sons, Richard I. Jr. of Adamant, Vt., Peter L. of Clearwater, British Columbia, Canada and John B. of Middlebury; two sisters, Margaret Trapnell of Nantucket, Mass. and Anne Hoover of Middlebury; and four granddaughters, four grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
