Notes for Florence CHAMBERS
Florence C. Jackson was born October 29, 1925 in Prospect Park, and passed away on February 13, 2017 in Kennett Square, at the home of her daughter.
She was the daughter of Louisa Brooks and David E. Chambers.
Flossie graduated from Temple University where she met her husband Albert Jackson. They were married for almost 60 years at the time of his death. Flossie was very athletic playing both basketball and field hockey at Temple and on club teams after graduation. Her athletic talent and leadership was honored when she was inducted into the Temple University Women’s Hall of Fame in 1983.
Flossie taught at Friend’s Central School for 28 years, and coached many championship teams in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. She instilled the values of health and life-long participation in sports long before the current fitness rage. Women whose lives she touched as a coach and a teacher still contact “Coach” to share their lives and talk about their “glory days”.
In retirement Flossie had three passions: her family, golf and painting. She won Ladies Golf Club Championships at Lord’s Valley Country Club in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and at Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Flossie was an accomplished artist and exhibited oil paintings in shows and exhibits. Her paintings often were inspired by her many trips with her husband and family to Europe, Ireland, Hawaii and national parks across the US. After returning to live in PA in 2010 she continued her art classes and her love of exercise by participating in fitness classes and swimming at Hersey’s Mill.
Beyond her athletic and artistic accomplishments, Flossie may best be remembered for her positive and giving attitude, her unwavering interest in others, and her support of friends and family.
She is predeceased by her husband, Albert B. Jackson, and her sister, Mary Lou Mayr.
She is survived by her three children, Joanne Foss, Janet Turner and Judy Jackson; her grandchildren, Matt and Andrew Foss, Jenni Fanelli and Cara Turner; and her great-grandchildren, Benjamin Fanelli and Piper Foss.
In her memory the family requests that donations be made to Neighborhood VNA Hospice, 795 East Marshall Street, Suite 204, West Chester, PA 19380-4400.
