Notes for Ida GRADY
Ida Grady Crossan "Ollie"
Age 88, of West Grove, PA, passed away peacefully at Jenner's Pond on September 21, 2013, as a result of congestive heart failure.
Ollie was born on November 9, 1924, at home in Ashland, Delaware. She was the daughter of Joseph F. and Catherine Sowers Grady. After graduating from A.I. du Pont High School in Wilmington, she attended Beacom College, and then went to work as a secretary in the Construction Division of the DuPont Company. In 1947 she married the love of her life, Richard M. Crossan. Ollie and Dick lived in Kaolin, Pennsylvania for almost 50 years, and raised five children. They were active in St. Patrick's Parish in Kennett Square, and, later, in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Parish in Avondale, and Assumption B.V.M. Parish in West Grove.
Ollie was a noted watercolorist. She studied at the University of Delaware with Julio da Cunha and Hilton Brown. She also was a student of Rea Redifer of Kennett Square, and other artists. Ollie's work was recognized in many juried exhibitions, including with the Winsor & Newton Award of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. She was a member of the National League of American Pen Women and the Howard Pyle Studio Group in Wilmington. Even as her eyesight deteriorated in later years, Ollie continued to sketch. She always took time to encourage young people, especially artists, to continue their education. Ollie took delight in the accomplishments of her granddaughter Dana, who said that "Mom-Mom put a paintbrush in my hand when I was 8, and I never put it down." She was proud of all her children, grandchildren and great-children, and relished their visits and the time she spent with them.
Ollie was preceded in death by Dick, her husband of 56 years, who died in 2003. She also was predeceased by her brothers Edward and Joseph, her sister Mary Ann, and her son Harvey. She is survived by her sister Margaret Pennington of Avondale, and her sons Michael (Carol Anne) of Flower Mound, Texas, and Richard M., Jr. (Terry) of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, her daughters Catherine "Cabby" Flynn (Tony) and Marie "Re" Flynn (John), both of Wilmington, and her daughter-in-law Theresa Crossan of Avondale, her grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, Anne, Patrick, Michael, Roddy, Bryan, Dana, Lori, Dan, Catherine, Jack and Joe, nine great-grandchildren, and many devoted nieces and nephews. She held her ninth great-grandchild the weekend before she died.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Ollie will be celebrated on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Roman Catholic Church, 8910 Newport Gap Pike, Avondale, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Church between 10-11 a.m. before Mass. Interment will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Ashland. Ollie's family requests that donations be made in her memory to The Studio Group, 1305 N. Franklin St., Wilmington DE 19806, or to St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Parish. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/delawareonline/obituary.aspx?n=ida-grady-crossan-ollie&pid=167125558#fbLoggedOut
