Jesse K. Hoar was born in Pennsylvania 21 September 1798; died in Fayette Co., iIl 4 April 1884. Jesse was reared among the Society of Friends and was taught early to love God and keep His commandments. At the age of 29, he married Mary Irwin who proved to be a faithful wife and helper. For 55 years they shared the joys and sorrows of life together. To them were born 11 children, 7 of whom still survive, one son in the ministry, Reverend B. A. Hoar, of the South Illinois Conference. When 30 years of age, he was united with the Methodist East Church and lived in her communion until God took him home. In 1844 he emigrated from Pennsylvania to Ohio and in 1856 to Illinois, where he remained until his death. To his aged companion and children, he left a priceless legacy--the example of a long and faithful Christian life. Jesse was a Quaker and Mary Ann a Presbyterian. They were both disowned by their churches because of their marriage. The couple subsequently joined the Methodist Episcopal Church.
