Notes for Dallett HEMPHILL
Dallett Hemphill, 74, an attorney and former West Chester Borough Councilman, died Monday at his home in West Chester.
Mr. Hemphill, who had practiced general law in the borough for more than 40 years, was the last of an unbroken line of family members who had been active with the Chester County Bar Association since 1790, said his daughter, Catharine Hemphill.
''He was an outstanding practitioner of law,'' said former Chester County Court Judge Thomas A. Pitt Jr., who continues to practice law in the borough.
''In all the years of his practicing law, no one either in or out of the legal community spoke poorly of him,'' Pitt said. ''He was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor. He had an unassuming way about him that endeared him to everyone.''
West Chester Mayor Clifford DeBaptiste, a funeral director, described Mr. Hemphill as ''an outstanding citizen and a member of one of West Chester's oldest families.''
While they saw many issues differently, Mr. Hemphill never let it interfere with their friendship, the mayor said.
Mr. Hemphill, a lifelong resident of the borough, graduated from St. George's School in Newport, R.I., and the University of Pennsylvania and its School of Law.
For six years, from the late 1960s into the early 1970s, he served as a Democratic member of the Borough Council.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Ann Cornwell Hemphill; daughters Phebe, Amy H. Dove, Dolly and Catharine D.; a sister; and two grandchildren.
He was a brother of the late Alexander Hemphill, former Philadelphia city controller.
Funeral services and burial will be private.
