Notes for Eleanor PYLE
Eleanor Pyle Latta, 90, of West Chester died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at home, with all of her children at her side.
She was the wife of James Latta Jr., who predeceased her in June 1995. Eleanor and Jim were married in Baton Rouge, La., on Dec. 20, 1942. Just days later, like so many in their era, Jim left home for the next three years to faithfully serve his country in World War II.
Eleanor was a homemaker who devoted her life to giving her family love and unconditional support.
Born in West Chester, she was the daughter of Alexander Duie and Mary Ellen Pannebaker Pyle.
Eleanor grew up in Coatesville, where in 1924 her father founded A. Duie Pyle Inc.
She attended the Coatesville area schools and graduated from Bucknell University in 1943.
During her early years, Eleanor worked with her father in their family trucking business. Eleanor and her father, who grew up on a farm near Coatesville, shared many special times together riding their horses in the fields that surrounded Coatesville at the time.
As an only child, Eleanor's dream was to have a large family to whom she could dedicate her life. And that she did. After Jim returned from World War II, Eleanor and Jim moved to West Chester, where they would spend the rest of their lives together raising their family and growing the Pyle business. She watched her father start the business and persevere through the hardships of The Great Depression and World War II years. This work enabled Eleanor to understand and appreciate the value and loyalty of the people who contributed so much as they worked alongside her, her father and her husband.
Throughout her life she supported the business in many ways, from entertaining customers with her husband to helping employees and their families through crises.
Eleanor and Jim raised five children in West Chester, and made many friends in the community over their many years. They had a special partnership and were devoted to always placing their children and their children's interests ahead of their own. Family always came first with Eleanor and Jim.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester.
Eleanor is survived by her five children, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. To Eleanor's pleasure, and credit as a mother, all five of her children have stayed close to home and reside in Chester County.
Surviving Eleanor are two daughters, Ellen Ann Eckman (Joe) and Jane Latta (Mark Goodfellow) and three sons, Jim (Gwyn), Duie (Gigi) and Peter (Robin) Latta. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Kathy Ann (Greg), Karalyn, Nathan and Katelyn Eckman; Joe (Elizabeth), Daisy, Tucker and Lucy Eckman; Alison, Jimmy and Jack Latta; Duie (Briana), John and Gioia Latta; Hans and Darcy Latta; Becky Granieri (Frank); and Sarah, Molly and Billy Latta.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, at the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester, Miner and Darlington streets, West Chester.
Interment will be private.
