Notes for Joseph A. HALLORAN

Joseph A. Halloran, age 81 of West Grove, PA, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at his residence at Jenner's Pond on Friday, May 2, 2003, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Halloran retired in 1984 as section manager in the purchasing department at Hercules, Inc, where he worked for 40 years. He was a graduate of Henry C. Conrad High School and a member of the Hercules Country Club. Mr. Halloran was also a member of St. Mary Magdalen Church for 44 years and served as a lay reader, usher and member of the parish council.

During the 1950s and 1960s, he was active in the Delaware Democratic Party. In 1966, he was a candidate for the newly formed New Castle County Council. He said at the time, "Running as a Democrat in Brandywine Hundred was a form of self-flagellation".

For almost 50 years he was active as an actor, producer and backstage worker in community theater. He and his wife, Charlotte, met in a Wilmington Drama League production in 1946. He served 2 terms as drama league president and was a life member of the Brandywiners. He acted in summer stock in Arden and with the Breck's Mill Cronies, and performed as well for Arena Stages and the Candlelight Music Dinner Theater. He was known for his signature role, Alfred P. Doolittle, in My Fair Lady, which he played in 4 separate productions over the course of his theater career. He also did radio work with the Catholic Forum of the Air and the Drama League.

He and his wife of 56 years, Charlotte (Tatnall) Halloran, had 2 daughters, Margaret A. Watkins of West Grove, PA and Nancy S. Halloran of Berkeley, CA; and 4 sons, Joseph D. of Baltimore, MD, Edward T. of Cincinnati, OH, David M. of South Hadley, MA and Charles G., who died in San Francisco in 1993. He is survived by a brother, John F. Halloran; and numerous grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 7 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Concord Pike & Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, where friends are invited to call after 10 am. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Ashland, DE, followed by a reception at Jenner's Pond.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary Magdalen Church, 7 Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803.
