World War II pilot, founder of Ennis Oil Co.

Charles H. Ennis, 80, of Embreeville, a land developer and World War II pilot who spoke to school children about aviation, died Sept. 3 at the Coatesville Veterans Administration Hospital.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Ennis was a former resident of Oxford and Chester Heights before living in Embreeville. He graduated from West Philadelphia High School and attended Baltimore Polytech and Brown Prep.

Mr. Ennis worked as a sales representative for Hartol Petroleum Corp. from 1946-1951 before starting the Ennis Oil Co. in Chester Heights in 1952. Mr. Ennis sold the company in 1967, becoming a yacht builder. He was responsible for building the first yacht on the Christiana River facilities since World War II. In 1972, Mr. Ennis began working in land development and home construction in Delaware and Chester counties. His signature project was Hilloch in Chadds Ford.

A C-47 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, Mr. Ennis participated in four major campaigns in the European theater and received the Air Medal. After serving from 1941-1945, he was discharged as a captain.

Mr. Ennis enjoyed model airplanes and would give lectures to school children about planes and aviation.

He was the son of James T. Ennis and Ada Thompson Ennis.

Survivors: Wife of 57 years, Frances ""Sis'' Smedley Ennis; sons, Charles L. Ennis of Unionville, Jay R. Ennis of West Grove; daughter, Gail E. Tefft of Oxford; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Concord Road, Concord.

Visitation: Immediately before the service at the church.

Burial: Private.

Contributions: The Organ Fund of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Route 472, Oxford, PA 19363; or to the VA Medical Center for Building 57-A, c/o Jeffrey Fitzsimons-Volunteer Services, Building 7, Blackhorse Pike, Coatesville, PA 19320.
