Notes for Henry Clayton SMEDLEY
Henry Clayton 'Hank' Smedley of New Garden Henry Clayton "Hank" Smedley, 87, of New Garden, died at home, surrounded by his family on September 3, 2011. Hank graduated from Media High School in 1941 and then went on to serve his country as a Marine in World War II. He also graduated from Pennsylvania Military College. Hank owned and operated the Smedley Construction Company through the 1970's, and was involved in the construction business until the 1980's. In 1970 he bought The Red Fox Inn with partner D. Winters. Hank operated Loch Nairn Golf Course which he designed and built, along with The Farmhouse Restaurant with his wife and two sons. He also designed, constructed and operated The Wetlands GC in Aberdeen, Md. with his sons. Hank built Radley Run Country Club in the late 1960's. He also designed and constructed his signature golf course in Jamaica, West Indies, which is now known as Cinnamon Hill GC in the 1970's for John Rollins and Pan American Airlines. This course was featured as a top 100 courses in the world at one time by Golf World Magazine. In Hank's younger years he was a very accomplished golfer who truly loved the game. Hank came from one of the oldest families in S.E. Pennsylvania and has a copy of the original land grant signed by William Penn in 1682. He is a direct descendent of Thomas Bromall of the Tuscarora Tribe, and also a descendent of the revolutionary war. Hank was president of the Brandywine Lions Club from where he received the citizen of the year award in 2003, and also was a Melvin Jones Fellow for Humanitarian Services. He is also in the Media Old Timers Hall of Fame for Football, and was known as "Hammering Hank". He is survived by his wife Virginia S. (Schmeelk) Smedley; two sons, Samuel C. Smedley and H. Christopher Smedley; granddaughter, Samantha Smedley; brother, Samuel Smedley; and sister, Frances Ennis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 15, at Church of the Advent, 401 N. Union St., Kennett Square, with a reception immediately following the service at Loch Nairn Golf Course in The Greathouse.
