Notes for Rulon Eyre WETHERILL
WETHERILL, RULON E. "BUDDY", 74 - of Cape May, passed away peacefully at his home on December 7, 2004. Buddy was born in Chester, PA on November 15, 1930. He was the youngest of six boys to attend Episcopal Academy, captaining the football team. After graduating from Episcopal in 1948, Buddy attended Williams College, leaving to answer his country's call by serving in the Navy during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, Buddy completed his degree in Education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1956. Buddy began his career at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School as a science teacher, very quickly showing a natural ability to pass along his love and knowledge of science to his students. In 1962, he became head of the Lower School at Germantown Academy (G.A.) which had moved to Fort Washington, PA. In addition to being a sterling classroom teacher, Buddy was a passionate athletics coach and was instrumental in developing G.A. into a co-educational institution. Because of his excellent instruction, G.A. began offering the "Wetherill" Award to the student with the best combination of academic and athletic performance. After ten years at G.A., Buddy returned to his alma mater, Episcopal, as a science teacher and head of the Lower School at the Merion and, later, Devon campus. He remained at Episcopal until his retirement in 1992. Following his retirement, Buddy moved permanently to Cape May with his wife Marge in order to spend more time pursuing his love of fishing, making time in the fall to cheer for the Philadelphia Eagles. He also enjoyed working in his garden and being the resident chef and handyman about the house.
Buddy is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Marjorie; children: Dagny Hyde of New Rochelle, NY and Rulon Wetherill, Jr. of Collegeville, PA; first wife: Dagny S. Wetherill of Springhouse, PA; brother: Harrison B. Wetherill of Easton, MD; two step-daughters: Merryn Hawthorne of Gainesville, VA and Gwenyth Nichols of Falls Church, VA, and two granddaughters and one grandson.
