Notes for Harrison Bispham WETHERILL

Harrison B. Wetherill of Easton, Md. Harrison B. Wetherill died on August 8 at the age of 92 in Easton, Md. Harry was born in Chester, Pa., the second of six sons of Robert Wetherill, Jr. and Barbara Bispham Wetherill and grew up around boats and the sea spending summers in Cape May N.J. After attending Episcopal Academy in Overbrook, Pa, he graduated from Yale University in 1941 prior to entering the Navy. During the Second World War Harry served aboard the light cruiser the "Brooklyn" in the Mediterranean and the heavy cruiser the "Canberra" in the western Pacific. He was awarded a naval commendation from Fleet Admiral William "Bull" Halsey Jr. for his service as gunnery officer on the Canberra and he achieved the rank of Lt Commander. After the war Harry worked in banking and then in 1956 purchased "Stock Grange Farm" in Romansville, Pa. from actor Claude Rains. Harry farmed the 350 acre property for the next 30 years. He loved the farming life and took great pride in implementing the best soil conservation practices. He also actively participated in community affairs including being vice chairman of the Downingtown Joint High School Authority in 1960 and being on the West Bradford Township Planning Commision from 1963 to 1967 and being the Vice Chair of the West Bradford Board of Supervisors in 1974 and 1975. Harry met his beloved wife Jean Pugh, from Charleston, West Virginia while she was at Smith College. Jean passed away in 1979. He later married Nora Gibson and they moved to Easton Md. to further pursue Harry's passion for sailing. Tennis was an important hobby and he played well into his 80's. He is survived by his three children: Wendy Hughes and her husband John, of Unionville, Pa., David Wetherill and his wife Bonnie, of Coatesville, Pa. and Harrison B. Wetherill, Jr. and his wife Susan of West River, Md. He is also survived by his grandsons, Brian Hughes of Tulsa, Okla., Benjamen Wetherill and his wife Yelena of Boston and Charles Wetherill and his wife Sanna of La Marsa, Tunisia, as well as by his three great grandchildren, Alida, Hilla and Samuel Wetherill. Harry was much loved. He was truly one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A celebration of Harry"s life will be held at the Chester Rural Cemetery, in Chester, Pa.
