Notes for Upshur Berkley Jr. ELLIS
U. Berkley Ellis, PhD, 87, husband of the late Anna I. "Ann" (Miller) Ellis, Frederick Mennonite Community, Upper Frederick Twp., died Thursday, at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. He was a former resident of College Ave., Trappe.
Dr. Ellis was born on July 14, 1924, in Philadelphia, and was a son of the late U. Berkley Ellis, Sr. and the late Sadie Bongaardt (Quigley) Ellis. He was a graduate of Northeast High School and attended University Of Virginia until he left for military service in World War Two. He later earned a bachelors degree from West Chester University and masters and doctoral degrees from Temple University.
Dr. Ellis served in the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, CO. He then attended Officer Candidate School and later served as a First Lieutenant, Infantry, in the Pacific. He retired in 1970, as a Lieutenant Colonel, from the US Army Reserve.
Dr. Ellis was a former superintendent of Perkiomen Valley School District. During his retirement he was an adjunct instructor at Ursinus College and executive director of the Montgomery Co. Medical Assn.
Dr. Ellis was a member of the Collegeville Rotary Club, Pottstown AMBUCS, Reserve Officers Assn., Military Order Of The World Wars, and 10th Mountain Division Assn. He was a member of the board of directors and chairman of the Eagle review board of Valley Forge Council, Boy Scouts of America, a PA Interscholastic Athletic Assn. baseball and basketball official, and youth leadership volunteer with the Freedoms Foundation Of Valley Forge.
Dr. Ellis had a life long interest and participation in sports. In college he played lacrosse, football, and was a championship swimmer. While teaching, he coached baseball. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed skiing into his 80's.
Dr. Ellis was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry, various committees, and as a Lay Reader.
Dr. Ellis is survived by his children, Susan M., wife of Knud E. Hermansen, Old Town, ME, and Berkley D., husband of Laurie J. (Hosack) Ellis, Robeson Twp.; his grandchildren, Knud A., husband of Alita (Putnam) Hermansen, Kiva A. Hermansen, Kai E. Hermansen, Berkley J. Ellis, and Jeremy M., husband of Patricia (Hayes) Ellis; and his sisters, Ruth, wife of John Thomas, Levittown, and Virginia, wife of C. Anthony Voight, Palmyra NJ. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Frank Ellis and Barbara Harold.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, at St. James Episcopal Church, Germantown Pike and Evansburg Rd., Lower Providence Twp., with the Rev. John Kimball, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
