Notes for Anthony Joseph Drexel Jr. PAUL

A.J. Drexel Paul Jr., 84, great-grandson of Drexel University founder Anthony J. Drexel and former chairman of Drexel's board of trustees, died of heart failure Thursday in Stuart, Fla.
A member of Drexel's board since 1949, Mr. Paul was a trustee emeritus at the time of his death. He served as chairman from 1970 to 1974.
He established the A.J. Drexel Paul Award in honor of his father, who also served as a university trustee for many years. The award, the highest presented by Drexel University's General Alumni Association, is given annually to an alumnus or alumna whose personal and professional achievements reflect the ideals exemplified by the university's founder as well as by Mr. Paul's father.
Mr. Paul, who was known as ''Drecky,'' founded the university's Anthony J. Drexel Society in 1965. Its members provide philanthropic leadership in furthering the university's academic goals.
''Anthony J. Drexel Paul Jr. served Drexel University with dedication and distinction,'' Constantine Papadakis, president of Drexel, said Friday. ''As a trustee, benefactor and advocate, he advanced the mission of his great-grandfather, Anthony J. Drexel, who founded Drexel University [in 1891] to provide technology-focused, applied learning for working-class Philadelphians. When I last visited with Mr. Paul, though in frail health, his pride in Drexel University remained strong and unwavering.''
At the time of his death, Mr. Paul was also a retired partner with the Philadelphia law firm of Hepburn Willcox Hamilton & Putnam. He joined the firm in 1944 and specialized in trust law. He was a partner from 1956 until retiring in 1985.
A 1937 graduate of Harvard University, Mr. Paul earned his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1941 and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1942.
During World War II, he was a commissioned officer in the Navy and served in the South Pacific and North Atlantic theaters.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Philadelphia Bar Association.
Mr. Paul is survived by his wife, Margaret Delano Paul; son, Anthony J. Drexel Paul 3d; daughters, Wendy Paul and Linda Olney; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Martin's Church in Radnor. The family requests that donations in Mr. Paul's memory be made to the Zoological Society of Philadelphia.
