Jonathan was engaged in tool manufacturing. He was the senior partner in the firm of Yerkes & Plumb, ( his partner was Fayette R. Plumb ) in Frankford, Philadelphia.
Yerkes & Plumb became one of the largest edged tool manufacturing firms in the country. He disposed of his interest in the tool works to his brother Edward, and moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he became president of the Drew Hardware Company.
