A resident of Kentfield, Calif., he died Friday, May 9, 1997, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 86. He was born in Franklin in 1910, eldest son of Elisha Blassingaime Spiller and Florence Lee Manship Smith Spiller. He studied petroleum engineering at LSU. For seven years before World War II, he lived in London and represented Mays Brothers Lumber Co. He returned to the United States to attend medical school at LSU in 1939, and completed his residency in internal medicine at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He became a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was stationed at Letterman Hospital at the San Francisco Presidio. Leaving the service, he trained at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, established a practice in San Francisco and later in Marin County, and supervised students at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. Survived by wife of 54 years, Caroline Coates Spiller, formerly of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Susan Acquistapace, Berkeley, Calif., and Jane Spiller, Santa Monica, Calif.; a son, Steven Spiller, Nevada City, Calif.; six grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, the Island Club of Suisun and California Waterfowl Association. A gathering of friends is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the family home in Kentfield. Another gathering will be held in his hometown of Franklin on Saturday, June 28, 1997.
