Notes for Barclay Harding III WARBURTON
Barclay Harding Warburton 3d, 61, internationally known yachtsman and restaurateur, died Sunday at Paradise Farm, his home near Newport, R.I.
Raised on Saracen Farm, an estate south of Doylestown, Bucks County, he was raised in the spirit of adventure. His father, the grandson of merchant John Wanamaker, was a sportsman pilot who dabbled in inventions, Hollywood films, around-the-world flights and journalism.
His father was killed in a hunting accident on the farm. His mother remarried. His stepfather, William K. Vanderbilt, an international sailor on his yacht, the Alva, introduced Mr. Warburton to life under sail, sparking a lifelong interest.
Mr. Warburton went on to found the American Sail Training Association (ASTA), an organization designed to interest youth in sailing ships.
As the organization's founder, he was instrumental in producing the Bicentennial tall ships visits, as well as last year's return of the tall ships.
He was educated in political science at Harvard University, but his studies were interrupted by a two-year wartime tour as a Navy lieutenant in the South Pacific. The experience increased his interest in the sea, and when he returned, he married a Prides Crossing, Mass., woman.
He decided to stay ashore and try his hand at farming. He did much of the pioneering work in organic farming. He worked his 175-acre spread at Ipswich, Mass., and ran for the legislature.
Well-bred, blond and handsome, he was twice elected to the Massachusetts House by his Republican district. He served from 1954 to 1960. He and Margaret McKean Reed Warburton divorced in 1959.
He returned to his interest in the sea, giving much of his attention to his yacht, the Black Pearl. He married Lore Maria Faught in 1970.
In 1976, he opened the Black Pearl restaurant, a popular watering hole for America's Cup crews and tourists.
He returned to Newport in 1967.
He is survived by his second wife; five children from his first marriage; a stepdaughter, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Friday at the Trinity Church in Newport. His ashes are to be scattered at sea Saturday morning from the deck of the Black Pearl. A memorial service will be held Friday at Trinity Church in Newport. Warburton's ashes were to be scattered at sea Saturday morning.
