Notes for John Brockie LUKENS
JOHN BROCKIE LUKENS, 78, a retired architect with the National Park Service, died Saturday at Central Park Lodge, a nursing home, in Chestnut Hill. He formerly lived in Lafayette Hill.
Mr. Lukens graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1933. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 after receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture.
He was elected a member of the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry, in 1937. He volunteered during World War II and served for four years in the Pacific as a second lieutenant in the 28th Tank Company and captain in the 37th Infantry Division.
He was an architect with the National Park Service from the 1960s until the early 1980s. Generally involved with historical restoration, he called himself "a doctor for six buildings," said his wife, Amy Austin Lukens.
One of his most notable projects was the design of the glass house in a historical park at Jamestown, Va.
Survivors, besides his wife: daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth; two granddaughters; and two sisters.
Services: noon Saturday, Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Willow Grove Avenue and St. Martin's Lane, Chestnut Hill, with burial to follow in the churchyard.
