Notes for Lewis Sharpless HICKMAN
Lewis S. Hickman, 84, a real estate developer responsible for many developments throughout Chester County, died Dec. 9 in Lancaster General Hospital. He was a resident of West Chester most of his life.
Born in West Chester, he attended local schools and later became a cabdriver for his parents' company, the Junior Cab Co., which was one of the first cab services in West Chester.
In 1930 he took over ownership of the company, and later sold off the cars to open a bus business in the borough. He later got out of the busing business to open a trucking and excavation business, which ultimately led to his career in building and development.
In the 1940s, his son, Ronald J. Hickman, took over the excavation business, while he used assets from his trucking business to purchase real estate in the county. By the time he retired in 1976 after more than 30 years in developing, he had built more than a dozen developments all over the county, some of the largest of which include Sunset Grove and Long Acres in West Whiteland and Oak Hill in West Goshen, according to his family.
Mr. Hickman belonged to the United Methodist Church of West Chester and was a charter member of the West Chester Lions Club.
Mr. Hickman was the husband of the late Margaret Dulin Hickman. In addition to his son, he is survived by his second wife, Ruth Frank Hickman; another son, Lewis S. Hickman 3d; a daughter, Betty H. Scheibe; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and a brother.
