Notes for Mary Alice WAGNER
Mary Alice Gordon, (nee Wagner), formerly of Paoli, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2018 at White Horse Village, Newtown Square, PA. She had been a resident since 2009.
Mary W. Gordon, age 91, was born in Sayre, PA to Hobson C. Wagner and Kathryn E Wagner. Her father was the former Superintendent of Tredyffrin Eastown Joint School District and her mother taught at Paoli Elementary School. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 1948 (B.A. in Chemistry), she worked as a chemist at the University of Pennsylvania where she met and married William Richard Gordon who was assistant treasurer at University of Pennsylvania. Mary and Richard settled in Paoli and she lived happily in the same residence until 2009. She was a 68-year member of Paoli Presbyterian Church, strong supporter of the Paoli Library, volunteer of the Upper Mainline Meals on Wheels (President 2000-2003), and President of her Mount Holyoke alumnae class for 3 years, and former chair of the Whitehorse Village Employee Appreciation Fund. She was a long-time member of Martin’s Dam Swim and Tennis Club as well as an avid tennis, gardener, master N.Y. Times crossword puzzle solver and bridge player. During the late 1990’s, she flew around the world with one of her college classmates. Mary Gordon is preceded in death by her husband, William Richard Gordon, her parents, Hobson C. and Kathryn E. Wagner, brother Daniel C. Wagner, PhD., sister Nancy W. Pusey and her daughter, Anne Gordon Kessler.
Mary W. Gordon is survived by sons William Murray (Lori), Robert Duff (Laine), Douglas Andrew (Linda) and son-in-law, Rex K. Kessler, M.D. She is survived by 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Whitehorse Village and their staff for their devoted care. She enriched the lives of all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
A Life Celebration service will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Paoli Presbyterian Church located at 225 South Valley Road, Paoli, PA 19301. Interment will be private.
Memorials may be given to Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 South Valley Road, Paoli, PA 19301 or Mount Holyoke College, Office of Advancement Gift Planning, 50 College Street, South Hadley, Massachusetts 01075.
