Daniel H. Wagner, 71, formerly of Malvern, a mathematician who owned and operated a consulting firm that specialized in defense contracts, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday at Whitehorse Village Retirement Community in Newtown Square.
In 1963, he founded Daniel H. Wagner Associates in Paoli and served as president and chairman of the board until retiring in 1986.
The company developed computer-assisted surface and undersea search strategies for the Navy and participated in the 1966 search for a U.S. hydrogen bomb in the Mediterranean Sea; in the 1968 search for the Scorpion, a nuclear submarine that went down in the Atlantic; in 1974 in the clearing of the Suez Canal of explosives and ship debris, and in 1986 for the wreckage of the Challenger space shuttle in the Atlantic.
Wagner Associates also developed computer software for the Navy and the Air Force, and for banks and oil exploration.
From March 1988 to June 1989, Mr. Wagner taught at the Navy postgraduate school in Monterey, Calif., and then at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., until 1991.
Mr. Wagner was disabled by a stroke last year.
He was born in Jersey Shore, Pa., and moved to the Main Line with his family in 1941. He graduated from Tredyffrin-Easttown High School in 1943 and from Haverford College in 1947.
He received a doctorate in mathematics from Brown University in 1951.
Mr. Wagner was a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Military Operations Research Society and the Naval Submarine League.
He had lived in Malvern for 40 years and was a member of Paoli Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Emma Mertz Wagner; four children, David H., Christopher D., Thomas J. and Elizabeth A.; two sisters, and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 S. Valley Rd., Paoli. Burial is private.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Boy Scouts of America, Chester County Council, 504 S. Concord Rd., West Chester, Pa. 19382.
