Notes for James Richard HOLLINGSWORTH

James Richard Hollingsworth departed this life on Thursday, April 7, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Caleb and Ella Hollingsworth. He later lived in Marshallton, Pennsylvania with his parents and sister, Margaret before moving to Wilmington, Delaware.
As a radio operator, he was a member of the United States Air Force and Delaware Air National Guard, he served honorably as a Staff Sergeant.
On August 20, 1955 he was married to Eva C. “Sue” Ross in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1959 his daughter Sandra was born and in 1970 his nephew Eugene Crew became a much loved and cherished member of his immediate family.
Jim lived in Wilmington and also had a home just outside of Rehoboth Beach Delaware. He enjoyed his time at the beach and could often be found fishing, boating and taking the children out to water ski. He could build or repair almost anything and was the first to offer help with projects to a friend or neighbor.
He was active in sports over the years and played softball for Diamond State Telephone Company. He remained active his entire life and even became a jogger at the age of 50.
Retiring in 1988, he moved to Spring Hill, Florida.
Active in community service his entire life, Jim is a past President and Vice President of the Telephone Pioneers. He worked to install bedside telephones at the local Veteran’s Hospitals. He repaired Talking Books for the blind. As a participant in the Life Member Club of Telephone Pioneers where he brought joy and happiness to many in area hospitals as Jimbo the Clown. He was also a member of The American Legion of Orlando.
Jim was an extremely active and beloved member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Spring Hill, serving as both Jr. and Sr. Warden. He was also a Sexton, Greeter and member of the Alter Guild. He was committed to the completion of Krysher Hall which was dedicated on April 18, 1997, one day before his birthday. He could often be found chatting with the pre-schoolers who lovingly referred to him as Mr. Jim.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years Eva C. “Sue” Hollingsworth. Also his daughter Sandra Hollingsworth Edmunds, granddaughter Carson P. H. Edmunds, nephew Eugene D. Crew, his wife Kathy and their children Matthew (Amy), Jeffrey, Lindsey and great niece Ava Elizabeth, all of Wilmington, Delaware.
Jim is also survived by his loving sister Margaret Vitalo and brother-in-law Daniel Vitalo. Additionally his nephew Dan Vitalo and wife Deb and their children Danny of Seaford Delaware, Laura and David. His nephew Rick Vitalo and wife Lynn and their children Nick of Milton, Delaware and Matt of San Diego, California. Also several cousins and their families in Chester County, Pennsylvania as well as numerous friends and his church family in Spring Hill.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church 2301 Deltona Boulevard, Spring Hill, Florida 34606. A reception will follow immediately at Krysher Hall. There will also be a service in the Delaware area to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his name to Marshallton United Methodist Church 1282 W. Strasburg Road - West Chester PA 19382, his historic family church and final resting place.
