FRANKLIN H. BRIGGS III, RETIRED PLANT SUPERVISOR

Franklin H. Briggs III, 74, a retired plant supervisor at the Westtown School and Swarthmore College, died Monday in Chester County Hospital, West Chester. He lived in Westtown the last 20 years.

Born in Chatham, N.Y., Mr. Briggs was a graduate of Greenwich (N.Y.) High School. In 1938 he earned a bachelor's degree from Earlham College in Richmond, Ind.

He began working at the Westtown School in 1944 as a plant supervisor, and in 1966 he left to become an assistant plant supervisor at Swarthmore College. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Middletown Friends Meeting, and in his teenage years was active with the American Friends Service Committee.

He was also a member of the Westtown-Goshen Rotary Club and served as a board member of the Sleighton School in Lima.

An avid bird-watcher, Mr. Briggs was a member of the West Chester Bird Club. He also enjoyed photography and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elinor Pennell Briggs; two sons, Franklin H. Briggs IV and Robert S. Briggs; a daughter, Barbara B. Montabana; two brothers; a sister, and three grandchildren.

A memorial service is to be held at 2 p.m. today in the Middletown Friends Meeting, Middletown Township. Interment is to be private in the adjoining burial grounds.
