Notes for George Raymond PEMBERTON
Mr. George Raymond Pemberton, age 73, of Middletown, DE, died on Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Christiana Hospital. George was born at home on Cleveland Avenue in Newark, DE, on March 8, 1938, son of the late John Pemberton and Theresa Cage Pemberton. His courage in battling heart disease and, most recently, kidney disease, was an inspiration to family and friends.
After graduating from Newark High School, Class of 1956, George enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve, 16th Rifle Company, on Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington, and served until 1963. He made his career with the DuPont Company at the Louviers site in the Engineering Department's Imaging and Reproductive Services, where he retired in 1992 after 35 years. Following his retirement, he delivered parts for the Brake Service Company in Newark until 2007.
George was a Life Member of Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co. in Newark, joining in 1962. Whether fighting fires in his younger years, working events in the banquet hall, or later helping with Monday night bingo, he regarded the many close friendships made through Aetna service as very special. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Elkton, MD, and the Newark Historical Society, and was a board member of Sunset Lake in Newark. He greatly enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and hearing about all their activities over the years. Also among his treasured memories were the many good times at Knox's cottage, fishing trips to the Outer Banks, UD football games with his brother, and California vacations visiting his wife's family.
George will be dearly missed by his wife of 48 years, Nelda Northcutt Pemberton; daughter, Kim Zinszer and her fianc?, Bill Eierman; brother, Pusey "Puse" Pemberton and his wife, Jackie; sister, Sharon Pemberton; and grandchildren, Austin Zinszer, Madison Zinszer, and Payton Eierman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Harrington.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staffs of Christiana Hospital, Millcroft Rehabilitation Hospital, and Amedysis Home Care (Dover) for the kindness, care, and concern shown to George during his illness. Special thanks also goes to the Spring Arbor friends and to Pastor Scott Burkley of New Covenant Church for encouragement, prayers, and support these past few months.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 8th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will be in White Clay Creek Cemetery, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark.
